About intermodal trains

Combined transport delivery or intermodal transport delivery is a system of freight transportation that smartly combines rail and road transportation in international traffic.

SunSmart provides cargo transportation services by rail in the format of intermodal trains. A train of appropriate length is formed from specialized container and/or semi-trailer platforms and runs to and from the destination station on a regular basis without changing from one departure or entry station to one destination or exit station.

For long-distance transportation, rail transport has no equal. By collecting a large number of goods in one freight train, are optimized transport processes and time, are provided significant economic and environmental benefits.

SunSmart uses trucks only for delivery over the shortest distances, from the cargo terminal to the final destination, in other words for the "first mile" and the "last mile" delivery.

Intermodal transport:

The movement of goods in one and the same loading unit or road vehicle, which uses successively two or more modes of transport without handling the goods themselves in changing modes.

By extension, the term intermodality has been used to describe a system of transport whereby two or more modes of transport are used to transport the same loading unit or truck in an integrated manner, without loading or unloading, in a door-to-door transport chain.

Intermodal transport consists in the use of various means of transport in order to optimize costs and delivery time. Thanks to the use of appropriate solutions, the goods can be easily moved from a truck to a ship or a train.

Check how exactly combined transport works, what advantages it has and why it is worth using.

This type of transport can be classified by:
-range;
-the type of units used;
-the nature of the means of transport used.

Combined Transport:

Combined road/rail transport was introduced in Europe 50 years ago and is now an important alternative for freight transport.

Combined transport is a form of intermodal transport. In this case, goods are transported using more than one mode of transport. Goods are transported by rail, inland waterway, sea or coastal road along the entire route. In turn, road transport is responsible for the final distribution. The system integrates different transport carriers into a single transport chain, thus combining the advantages of each.

Combined transport is often referred to as intermodal European transport. In this system, the truck is transported by rail, inland waterway or coastal sea without reloading the goods. In the final stage, the products are brought back via road transport, which makes it possible to reach any place.

Combined transport can be divided into:
-accompanied transport;
-transport with a vehicle and driver using another mode of transport;
-unaccompanied transport;
-transport without driver.

The advantages

The advantages of combined transportation over conventional road transportation have been known for a long time and are widely used in the countries of the European Union, because they provide:
  • rhythmicity of transportation;

  • estimated transportation time;

  • the possibility of integration into the European system of combined transportation;

  • projected cost of intermodal train transportation service;

  • high speed and guarantee of cargo delivery in accordance with the train schedule (just in time);

  • safety of transportation in any weather conditions;

  • reduction of border and customs control time;

  • preservation of the vehicle, its maintenance cost and fuel economy;

  • maintenance of highways;

  • preservation of the environment;

  • saving costs for the preparation of accompanying documents.

In addition, there are practically no weight restrictions for the transportation of road trains by railway.The main necessary condition in the organization of combined transportation is the availability of technical means.

The operator of combined transportation on the railways of Ukraine is SunSmart, which owns a patented technology of loading, transportation and unloading (craneble/non-craneble) of semi-trailers, and provides complex transport and forwarding services using the advantages of combined transportation.
